Creating access to AI education: Designing the AI Education Catalog

OVERVIEW

Created through a joint partnership between the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology and The AI Education Project, the AI Education Catalog aims to raise awareness of the AI-related programs available to students and educators, as well as to help inform AI education and workforce policy.

I was brought onto the project to refine the platform's user interface design, merging the two organizational brands as one in an information-forward yet playful approach.

FRAMING

We set out to design a platform that felt intuitive and simple for users, despite the complexity and breadth of information at their fingertips. On the catalog, users should be able to:

  • Confidently input their specifications

  • Clearly and seamlessly access database results in a downloadable, easily formatted file so teachers could easily share specific, targeted options with their students aligned with student financial and academic needs

  • Understand individual result tiles without referencing search specifications through color use and icons

  • Access results and interact with content without downloading

Catalog element styles were developed, ultimately defining many search functionalities and categories with their respective colors and icons.

Ensured easy download via clearly defined download button + auto CSV generation

Subject colors and icons aligned with both AIEDU and CSET branding

PROTOYPING

Multiple iterations and prototypes were presented that explored seamless integration with both aiEDU and CSET's main websites.

Ultimately, we landed on the version of the database below.

Since release, hundreds of teachers and students have been connected to local and national programming, no matter the cost or limitations. The database is still being maintained by CSET.
